LASG Flags Off Capacity Development Programme for OEQA Evaluators

The Lagos State Government has commenced a 10-day capacity development training programme for Evaluators in the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), in a renewed effort to strengthen professional standards, improve school evaluation and enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the state.

Declaring the training programme open on Monday at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja, the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, described it as a strategic investment in the continuous professional development of personnel responsible for monitoring and evaluating the quality of education delivered in schools in Lagos State.

Alli-Balogun said Evaluators play a critical role in the education system, noting that the quality of their assessments and reports provides the government with reliable evidence to identify areas of strength, address gaps and make informed decisions aimed at improving teaching and learning.

He noted that the changing education landscape, marked by increased reliance on data, technology and contemporary assessment methods, as well as greater emphasis on safeguarding and inclusive practices, makes continuous professional development imperative for personnel responsible for evaluating schools.

“The THEMES+ Agenda of Mr Governor places education at the centre of human capital development. Under the EKO Learners Initiative and other reforms in MBSE, we cannot afford to have weak links in quality assurance. The quality of what happens in the classroom must be seen, measured and improved. And that responsibility rests largely with you,” the commissioner stated.

He urged the participants to engage actively with the facilitators and apply the knowledge and skills acquired to their duties, stressing the need for competence, objectivity and integrity in the conduct of school evaluations.

“Our commitment as a ministry is to continually build the capacity of our education personnel and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Our goal is to build a crop of evaluators who are knowledgeable, professional, tech-driven and fit for purpose,” he said.

Describing Evaluators as “the eyes, ears and conscience of quality in our education system,” Alli-Balogun said their findings and recommendations could directly influence school improvement, teacher performance and learning outcomes.

He therefore commended the leadership of OEQA for organising the training and charged the office to ensure proper documentation, monitoring and post-training support so that the knowledge acquired translates into improved practices and measurable outcomes in schools.

In his welcome address, the Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Dr Sulaimon Olagoke Ogunmuyiwa, expressed appreciation to the commissioner for his presence and continued support for the professional development of personnel in the office.

Ogunmuyiwa explained that the training was designed to strengthen the competencies of evaluators and equip them with contemporary knowledge and practical skills required to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

He said the programme represented another significant step by the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and OEQA, towards building a highly competent, professional and high-performing education quality assurance workforce.

In attendance were the Evaluators and other education stakeholders.
