LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT HONOURS SPELLING BEE WINNERS AT DINNER HELD ON THE 8TH OF FEBRUARY, 2026

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadiri Hamzat, has charged students to shun vices on social media and focus on their studies. He made this call at a dinner hosted by his wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, on behalf of the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu in honour of Miss Etiyemonu Esther, the winner of the 21st edition of the Spelling Bee competition.

The dinner, which was held at the Deputy Governor’s Lodge in Ikoyi, was attended by top government officials, including the Honourable Commissioner for Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Ali-Balogun, the Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite and the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Mr Sanni Omotayo Layemo.

In his remarks, Dr. Hamzat urged the students to become changemakers and not just complainants. He also recommended the book “The Man in the Arena” to the students, emphasizing the importance of taking action and being proactive.

The wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, advised the students to carefully choose their friends and not allow their friends to choose them. She emphasized the need for the students to be good ambassadors of their parents, schools, and Lagos State.

The Honourable Commissioner, in his remarks, challenged the students to appreciate the huge investment of the government of Lagos State in education and make the nation proud. He concluded that the future belongs to the youths being nurtured today.

The dinner was attended by other notable guests, including Commissioner 3 at the Teaching Service Commission, Hon. Segun Agbaje, and the Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa. Also, in attendance was Mrs Kehinde Ogunlana, the Director of Private Education and Special ol Programmes and Mr Hakkem Agbabiaka, the Director Special Programmes and Intervention Unit.

The Spelling Bee competition is a prestigious event that aims to promote academic excellence and linguistic skills among students in Lagos State. The winner, Miss Etiyemonu Esther, was accompanied by her colleagues, including the One-Day Deputy Governor, Miss Awoyemi Dorcas, and the One-Day Secretary to the State Government, Miss Salami Jumai.
