PRESS RELEASE
LAGOS OEQA TEAM BEGINS MONITORING OF SCHOOL RESUMPTION COMPLIANCE
To ensure strict adherence to the official resumption date as outlined in the Harmonized Academic Calendar for the 2024/2025 academic session, the Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has launched a state-wide monitoring exercise for schools below the tertiary level.
Leading the monitoring team on Monday at Ikeja Senior High School, GRA, Ikeja, the Coordinating Director of OEQA, Mr. Remi Abdul, emphasized that the exercise was intended to enforce compliance with government directives on school resumption and academic readiness across the state.
Mr. Abdul stated that the monitoring was being conducted to assess the level of compliance by schools and confirm their preparedness for the new academic session. He recalled that the state government had previously issued the 2024/2025 academic calendar, clearly specifying resumption dates for each term.
He further noted that the exercise was also meant to evaluate both academic and non-academic preparedness, including the readiness of teachers and students to commence learning activities.
According to him, “Part of our focus is to ensure that schools are well-equipped and ready to provide a safe, conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.”
Mr. Abdul explained that the team also inspected school facilities, safety protocols and statutory academic records to verify that proper documentation has been completed. “We check that safety measures are in place and that both the physical environment and academic records meet required standards,” he said.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding and child protection, urging school administrators to prioritize the well-being of students at all times.
Mr. Abdul reminded school heads and proprietors of ongoing initiatives introduced earlier this year by the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun. These, according to him, included the reintroduction of extracurricular activities and weekly essay writing exercises aimed at improving learning outcomes and students’ performance in external examinations.
He encouraged school leaders to work diligently toward achieving better results in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), in line with the Commissioner’s directive. He also advised teachers and academic staff to register for the free, mandatory online training on Safeguarding and Child Protection available on the OEQA website: www.oeqalagos.com.
Also speaking on the exercise, the Director of Monitoring and Investigation, Mrs. Khafilat Ashimi, explained that the two-week monitoring exercise, scheduled from Monday, April 28th to Tuesday, May 6th, 2025, would cover both public and private schools across all six education districts in the state.
Other members of the monitoring team included the Coordinating Director of Education District Six, Mrs. Folusade Sofola; Director of Quality Assurance, Mr. Taofeek Ajibade; and Director of Private Education and Special Programmes, Dr. Suleiman Ogunmuyiwa, among others.
