In furtherance of ensuring compliance with the State’s government directives that all schools should shut down activities so as to curtail the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19), the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has embarked on compliance monitoring exercise to schools across the State.
Addressing newsmen during the exercise, the Director General, OEQA, Mrs. Abiola Seriki Ayeni said the exercise, which was being done simultaneously across the State was meant to ensure that all schools are closed according to the directives of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Ayeni averred that while majority of schools have actually complied as there are no students and teachers in most schools visited, she however observed with dismay that some boarding schools have issues with getting parents to timely pickup their wards or children.
In her words “A few schools, especially some boarding schools have had issues with getting students to leave their premises or have not really done a good job at communicating the emergency situation to parents”
“We have also noticed that other schools as well have decided to deliberately not comply, with their students on campus taking examination and actions have been taken on them”. She added.
She said central to all the monitoring exercise is child safety, hence, if any of the team gets to schools that are yet to comply, such schools were educated on the need to be cooperative with government as it bothers on the safety of all children, teachers and the general public.
Ayeni stated with optimism that subsequent days of monitoring exercise should witness total compliance by all schools in the State, while also emphasizing the importance of continued sensitisation through the various social media handles, radio and television as currently done.
Schools visited by the Director General’s team were Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, Oregun-Ikeja, Chrisland Schools, Opebi-Ikeja, Maryland Comprehensive Secondary school, Maryland, Jeco College and Homat Pivotal Schools both in Ikorodu area of the State.
